Agencies should ask their clients more questions in 2020 and clients might want to give their agencies more space. Those were just two of the New Year’s Resolutions that Selbey Anderson founders Dom Hawes and Simon Quarendon and their guest, Julian Roberts suggested to listeners of the January edition of their podcast series; Marketing Trek.
A possible resolution that might apply to both in-house and agencies was for managers to give their staff more training and exposure to the commercial aspects of marketing and not just the technical or craft skills. As podcast co-host Dom Hawes said, “junior staff, whether in house or in-agency need to better understand that marketing exists to support an organisations’ growth and therefore they need to understand what else is driving that growth from a broader, commercial perspective”.
Marketing veteran Julian Roberts was the guest speaker for the January episode and used his interview as an opportunity to explain how clients could get more value from their agencies; primarily be leaving them alone and not interfering too much in the creative process.
As well as interviewing Julian, co-hosts Dom and Simon used the podcast as an opportunity to brief listeners on the progress they had made in growing the Selbey Anderson network in 2019 as well as outlining their plans for 2021. These include targeting a further four acquisitions as well as setting up a shared service centre that will centralise purchasing across the group.
Commenting on their decision to produce a podcast series, Dom said, “It’s estimated that 23% of the UK population listen to podcasts and although we don’t expect that many to tune in to ours just yet, we do see them as an opportunity to reach a much wider audience than we have done to date. We meet hundreds of interesting people who are doing some truly fascinating work in the marketing space and thought it would be worthwhile sharing what we have learnt from those meetings with others.
We’re encouraged by the number of potential guests that have agreed to be interviewed and think our listeners will find what they have to say will be interesting. Julian’s interview certainly is”.
