Integrated marcoms group, Selbey Anderson adopts Team of Teams strategy to accelerate growth; creates new Agency Management Board and appoint Greentarget’s Jeff Watt as its first Chair.
One of the primary benefits of setting up a new agency group from scratch is not having to dismantle legacy structures. But, it reflects the ‘warp speed’ that agencies now operate at that, after just two trading years, we need to change our management structure. We’re intending to accelerate growth as we come out of the pandemic. So, we’re putting power into the hands of our agency leaders. This month, we have set up an Agency Management Board (AMB) and appointed Jeff Watt, joint MD of Greentarget, as its first Chair.
General Stanley McChrystal’s seminal book, ‘Team of Teams’ provided the blueprint. In the book he argues that a team of teams strategy has the potential to transform organisations of any size. Team of Teams combines extremely transparent communications with a highly decentralised decision-making authority to act faster, be more adaptable and overcome complexity.
The people that have to live with decisions should be making them
We buy into his argument, so as a first step we’ve decentralised decision making by creating the AMB. The board comprises managing directors from group agencies. We’ve empowered it to be the primary decision-making unit within the group.
This approach gives greater control to the agencies, but also makes them more accountable to each other. We’re confident that it will also accelerate decision making and introduce more horizontal communications in preference to the vertical communications that was beginning to take precedence within the group.
We believe that this new approach will enable Selbey Anderson to accelerate growth beyond its current pace which is already rapid by any standard. We have grown from £0 to £10m in revenues in just two trading years.
The AMB Chair and its members are appointed annually by the group CEO and COO. The inaugural Chair is Jeff Watt, who will remain joint MD of integrated communications consultancy, Greentarget. He is joined by Julie Cheetham from BURN Marketing, Mark Pinnes from Flagship Consulting, Brett Sammels from LAW Creative and Dafina Grapci-Penney, also from Greentarget.
